What is XR” + “What you’ll need to set up VR in your library

Updated: Apr 4

What is XR?

XR is a catch-all term for any technology that either immerses a user within a virtual world (Virtual Reality) or superimposes digital elements over real environments and objects (augmented reality).

VR has been around for a surprisingly long time, starting with the “Sword of Damocles” system created in 1968. As you might expect, VR has come a long way since then, and the definition of what is or isn’t VR has blurred and expanded over time.

Some people consider video games a form of Virtual Reality, others have projected graphics over an entire room and called that VR. When we at XR Libraries talk about VR, we’re talking about headset devices that create virtual worlds of sight and sound that the user can interact with in novel and exciting ways.

VR is currently being used for job training, documentary films, live events, and video games just to name a few. The field of VR is still expanding, with new and more advanced headsets being developed and released at an exciting pace.

But what about augmented reality?

Augmented reality has been in the news for a few years now, thanks to Niantic’s popular collectable and multiplayer battle game: Pokemon Go. This game takes imagery of real places filmed live by the user and adds virtual elements like 3d models, effects, and interfaces. This is the core of what Augmented reality means.

AR is not just for video games. Artists use VR to enhance their sculptures and graphics with animated elements, virtual popup books use AR to bring characters to life, and digital instructions are projected onto the workplace for training, efficiency, and safety.

By integrating XR, libraries can remain on the cutting edge of technology and bring exciting experiences to their patrons that they might not find anywhere else.

What you’ll need to set up VR in your library

When setting up VR in any public space, you’ll need to set aside a dedicated space, put protocols in place, and of course, get your equipment running.

Here’s a comprehensive list of what a library should have in order to set up a safe and functional VR station:

  • At least one VR headset and its controllers.

  • A smart device (smartphone or tablet) that can set up and manage your VR device(s).

  • Charging equipment, like cables, outlet adapters, and power strips.

  • Batteries for the controllers.

  • Sanitization equipment such as alcohol-free wipes, antimicrobial solution, or an ultraviolet cleaner.

  • A charging/sanitization space out of view of the patrons

  • A use space of at least 6 feet.

  • A chair, preferably one that can rotate and be moved around easily.

  • Mats or marks on the floor that limit the range of your headset.

  • Safety protocols.

  • A sign-up and timing system so everyone can have a fair turn with the headset(s).

  • Promotional materials such as fliers, posters, or a monitor with looping video.

  • A really cool person who knows the equipment, content, and protocols and who can guide a patron through a VR experience.
